How We Got Here
Video Production Services (2012-Present)
Company: OVG Space/Brand Video Pro Agency
Incorporated in 2012, by filmmaker Kenim O, we delivered original content to our clients. From documentaries for broadcast TV, and exclusive interviews with world leaders like Presidents Clinton, and Obama - to adverts, promo videos,& podcasts for brands; we learned the content landscape and how to engage audiences the traditional way.
While we made many clients happy and took on a variety of exciting projects, we faced one main challenge most businesses’ like ours face; scale. Due to the nature of filmmaking, and the attention to detail required in designing transformative storytelling, our team could only handle a couple of clients a month. Scaling our customer base and productivity has been on our mind and the main challenge we aimed to solve.
Clients:
SVOD Streaming Service (2020-Present)
Company: StreamOVG
In 2020, the whole world shut down. To solve our problem with scaling, we sought to open up our customer base to the public. Transitioning from a b2b company to serving a b2c audience. After all, Kenim O, the founder, had been creating original docs and web drama series for her YouTube audience & developing studio deals for original films and series. Luckily for us, we started producing original documentaries in January of that year. For the next 2 months, we bulk-shot 30 or so interviews for a docu-series.
Little did we know, in march, our lives would be disrupted. Lockdowns not only stopped the flow of our b2b customer base, but they also put a stop to all our productions. We used what we had already gathered and launched StreamOVG in June with a modest but effective content inventory. As lockdowns relaxed, we produced and released documentaries, dramas, and films consistently for the rest of that year.
Social Media Virality (2017, 2021-Present)
Brands: OVG Media(2017), Brand Video Pro & The Kenim O Show (2021-Present)
A massive revelation came to us in 2021 - we had not fully capitalized on the streaming boom of 2020. Sure we launched a SVOD service backed by a paywall, and it offered us significant revenue but had we released all our content for free on social media, we would have had something far more impactful than money - which was people; A loyal customer base that didn’t only make one purchase, they came back, over and over again. Yes, we were able to have re-occurring customers with StreamOVG, but that number would have been exponential had our content been available to the public for free, during the most content binge-able moments our society has faced to date. Lesson learned, but it wasn’t too late to strike.
And so we set out to release free content to the public with Brand Video Pro, & The Kenim O Show. Results? We received millions of viewers on Tiktok and hundreds of thousands on other platforms. This meant that we had more loyal customers. But you see this wasn’t our first viral experience. Kenim O had reviewed Game of Thrones in a YouTube series she created back in 2017, and that garnered millions of views. But once the show ended, that channel died with it. At the time, she wasn’t able to convert that audience to her other products and brand at large. Lesson learned. Now it was 2021, and having understood the lessons from the past, we were able to advance, this time selling products on the backend and building a following loyal to our brand and not just the subjects we discussed.
As they say, the bigger you get, the bigger your problems. We had a tight daily upload schedule to meet the demands of our content. This allowed us to fully understand all the pain points brands face when trying to tackle content creation. Consistency, efficiency & cost-effectiveness. For us scaling was no longer a desire, but now a necessity. We did a good job of systemizing the whole process. Releasing daily videos on two separate brands across 13 social platforms. One year & thousands of video uploads later, burnout set in. You see, there are just certain things that machines do better. And so we had to go back to the drawing board.
